What Is Aquamation?

Aquamation, also known as alkaline hydrolysis or water cremation, is a respectful process that uses water, temperature, and natural alkalinity to accelerate the same natural process that occurs when a body returns to the earth.

Unlike traditional cremation, aquamation uses no flame. Instead, the body is placed in a specialized vessel where water and an alkaline solution gently break down soft tissue. The remaining bone is processed into a fine powder and returned to the family, much like traditional cremated remains.



Families receive their loved one's remains in an urn and may choose memorialization, burial, scattering, or placement in a columbarium.

How Does the Process Work?

Many families find the step-by-step process of alkaline hydrolysis incredibly comforting when compared to traditional methods:

1. The Gentle Solution: The body is placed in a clean, state-of-the-art stainless steel vessel. A solution of 95% warm water and 5% alkali is introduced.
   
2. Natural Breakdown: Over a period of several hours, the gentle flow of water and controlled heat breaks down organic material into its natural chemical components—leaves, sugars, and amino acids.
   
3. The Return: At the end of the water cremation process, only the mineral bone matter remains. These bones are dried and processed into a fine, ivory-white powder.
   
4. The Keepsake: Just like traditional cremation, these "ashes" are returned to the family in an urn, allowing you to hold a beautiful memorial service, scatter them in a meaningful place, or keep them close.
